Research Priorities & Collaboration

"Our research project, titled “ML modeling and AI-based software that identifies and tracks critical risk factors leading to high obesity rates among NHOPI adults and youth in Hawaii: A preliminary study.”, will develop a machine learning (ML) model for health disparities research to identify the factors that best explain the obesity rate difference between Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders (NHOPI) and other population, and will develop a personal AI-based smart software focused on ML identified factors. The long-term goal of this research is not only limited to investigate this particular health problem among NHOPI but to set up a cutting-edge Health Equity Lab at Hawaii Pacific University (HPU) to develop community-rooted AI/ML-powered technologies to investigate the high-priority health issues and diseases that are growing among NHOPI. Through our research, HPU, in general, will strength its AI/ML infrastructure and education, meet its obligations as a minority serving institution, promote student-led research, and develop its health equity research reputation within the community." -- HPU 2023
