Purpose
The AIM-AHEAD Fellowship Program in Leadership was designed to prepare tomorrow’s leaders to champion the use of AI/ML in addressing persistent health disparities in ways that develop the human capital to promote continued engagement, adoption, and expansion of AI/ML at the level of programs, systems, and policies.
About AIM-AHEAD
Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Consortium to Advance Health Equity And Researcher Diversity (AIM-AHEAD) is an initiative funded by the National Institutes of Health that is dedicated to enhancing diversity in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML), with emphasis on reducing health disparities and promoting health equity. Led by the AIM-AHEAD Coordinating Center, this initiative has cultivated a diverse nationwide consortium that embraces equity and transparency, aimed at leveraging AI/ML to enhance health outcomes across diverse and under-resourced communities. Through the establishment of strategic partnerships, targeted research programs, and engagement with key stakeholders, AIM-AHEAD continues to bolster participation and foster meaningful involvement within the AI/ML and health equity field.
Participants
This program engaged a diverse group of participants from underrepresented populations who maintained an affiliation with a diverse stakeholder setting (e.g., a healthcare agency, minority-serving institution, business enterprise, or community organization) engaged or interested in applying AI/ML methods to data consistent with the scientific objectives of AIM-AHEAD. Leadership Fellows were matched with mentors based on AI/ML expertise, leadership experience, and sector, and participated in mentored didactic and experiential educational activities.

Impact
The Leadership Fellowship program has empowered fellows to acquire the leadership competencies necessary to promote and achieve the strategic imperatives of AIM-AHEAD. Through participation in other AIM-AHEAD programs, Leadership Fellowship Fellows have further enhanced the professional networks of AIM-AHEAD Consortium stakeholders, particularly those from groups underrepresented in AI/ML research. Furthermore, graduates of the Leadership Fellowship program serve as advocates in their community regarding the use of AI/ML as a tool to address health disparities.
